Creative Writing with Anna Polonyi: Friction in Life and Fiction

Are you feeling tense? Why is it that tension is something we avoid in real life but like on the page? What jolts our curiosity and what sustains it? What can clouds, taking a bath or driving teach us about writing? “Write what you know” is a common piece of advice. But “Write what you’d like to know more about” may be even better. In this course, you’ll learn how to spark, honor and feed your curiosity: follow it down rabbit-holes, infect others with it, and channel it on the page. In our morning seminars, we’ll explore writing that makes us wonder, ponder and feel more alive to the world. You will write freakish amounts, using prompts, generative exercises, field trips and improvisation games. These two weeks are all about mining for new material by inspiring each other, experimenting with voice and form, surprising ourselves and pushing the boundaries of what’s comfortable. In the afternoon workshops, we’ll read each other’s work trying to imagine each draft in its ideal form. You will receive tailored notes and learn the ropes of how to run your own constructive workshops. By the end of our time together, you’ll walk away with brand-new poems, micro-essays and stories, concrete ideas for how to make your writing even stronger, a writing community and a set of craft tools to use long after the summer is over. Writers and visual storytellers who will keep us company along the way: Lynda Barry, Ursula Le Guin, Ben Okri, Muriel Ruckeyser, Ali Smith, George Saunders, Disnovation Collective, Cauleen Smith, Sophie Calle, Raymond Queneau, A. E. Stallings.

Anna Polonyi is a trilingual writer who usually gets her proverbs wrong and reads books about punctuation for fun. A fiction graduate from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she is at work on a novel about a mythical creature called the Beast of the Gévaudan. When not in Iowa, you can find her in Nantes, France, rowing with an 8-person crew or learning how to identify clouds.
