Full course description
There is a separate application process for this course. If you have not been accepted into the Iowa Young Writers' Studio online Summer Residential Program you are not eligible to enroll.
FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE (Playwriting with Micah Ariel James)
This summer, we’ll work together to chart the path of a play from inspiration and ideas to the page, and from the page to the stage. How do playwrights use dialogue to build a universe? How do you identify a compelling and sustainable central idea or major dramatic question? How can you use stage directions and opening lines to create images that inspire intense curiosity? How can a playwright set the stage for successful collaboration between directors, actors, designers, and others? We will explore these questions and more as we discuss selections from published plays, consider the creative processes of established playwrights, and learn by writing and workshopping our own work.
Micah Ariel James is a playwright, dramaturg, and teaching artist based in Iowa. She is also a community engagement specialist who develops, supports, and facilitates programs with an eye toward building communities that are welcoming, inclusive, and equitable. Micah received an MFA in Theatre Arts (Playwriting) from the University of Iowa and a BA in Playwriting from Columbia College Chicago.
