Full course description
This 2-week online course is part of the Iowa Young Writers' Studio Online Camp, Session 2, July 11-24, 2021. There is a separate application process for this course. If you have not been accepted into Session 2 of the Iowa Young Writers' Studio Online Camp you are not eligible to enroll.
This summer, we’ll work together to chart the path of a play from inspiration and ideas to the page, and from the page to the stage. How do playwrights use dialogue to build a universe? How do you identify a compelling and sustainable central idea or major dramatic question? How can you use stage directions and opening lines to create images that inspire intense curiosity? How can a playwright set the stage for successful collaboration between directors, actors, designers, and others? We will explore these questions and more as we discuss selections from published plays, consider the creative processes of established playwrights, and learn by writing and workshopping our own work.
Micah Ariel James is a playwright (Four Stories, How We Bury the War Dead, Better Weather, The Honey War), dramaturg, and teaching artist, with particular interests in aging and memory studies, oral history, and restorative justice. She received an MFA in Theatre Arts (Playwriting) from the University of Iowa and a BA in Playwriting from Columbia College Chicago. Please ask her about her dogs.
