Full course description
There is a separate application process for this course. If you have not been accepted into the Iowa Young Writers' Studio Summer Residential Program you are not eligible to enroll.
In this course, I care about quantity over quality. My hope for young writers is for all of you to turn out as many imperfect pages as possible during our time together. Every day we will read new work out loud and offer feedback. In critique, I use the Critical Response Process developed by dance-theatre artist Liz Lerman. CRP ensures artist-centered feedback.
When we are not writing, we will be exploring form, generative techniques and object theatre. Students can expect an introduction to Aristotle’s Poetics, three-act structure, five-act structure, the Hero’s Journey, the Heroine’s Journey, the well-made play, and Brechtian techniques among others. I will offer prompts of varying degrees of complexity, and I will occasionally challenge students to create theatre without words using exercises from the Viewpoints method.
I will endeavor throughout to remind everyone (including myself) that we are surrounded by infinite sources of inspiration.
