Full course description

This 2-week online course is part of the Iowa Young Writers' Studio Online Camp, Session 2, July 11-24, 2021. There is a separate application process for this course. If you have not been accepted into Session 2 of the Iowa Young Writers' Studio Online Camp you are not eligible to enroll.

Imagine you are in the future: What year is it? Where are you? What images do you see? What sounds do you hear? What are the poets up to?

Writers have ancient traditions: In the past we have acted as recorders, oracles, musicians, performers, notetakers, observers, and translators. This course will consider our roles in the future.

Our primary text, American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin by Terrance Hayes, will help us reimagine the futures of race, class, and gender.
We will read four pieces at a time, considering how these themes relate to American Poetry.

We will create a diverse portfolio of work based on daily writing prompts. The prompts will explore issues of race, climate change, and identity.

Each student will have a one-on-one Zoom workshop with the instructor, as well as the option to share their pieces on the course discussion board for peer review. Students will have unlimited time to create and post their daily writing exercises. We will interact through these discussion boards throughout the course, but students are encouraged to reach out to one another outside of class.

All materials will be available on the course website.

See you in THE FUTURE...
