Creative Writing with Santiago Sanchez: The Joy of Queer and Trans Writing

In this two-week course, we’ll give ourselves to the joys of Queer and Trans writing. We’ll get acquainted with the work of our queer ancestors to understand the lineages and traditions we have at our disposal as contemporary writers. Focusing on four broad categories—Coming Out Narratives, Trans Narratives, Queer Magic, and The Body and Desire—we’ll discuss how these queer narratives appear in popular culture and in literature, focusing on how we can write past these categories and into new, uncharted territory. Our goal will be to center desire and pleasure in our writing practices, since these two essential parts of life are often tainted by fear and shame for queer people. We'll ask: How can we reclaim and define desire and pleasure for ourselves through writing? How can we trust our deep delight to guide us, like a compass or map, through our stories and poems? Lastly, you don’t have to be queer to be part of this class! All I ask for is a curiosity and desire to learn about queer writers, and what they have to teach of us about telling our own stories, on our terms, joyfully.

Santiago Sanchez is a queer, Colombian-American writer based in Grinnell, Iowa, where they spent the 2021-22 academic year teaching writing at Grinnell College. Their stories have been published in McSweeney's, ZYZZYVA, Subtropics, Joyland, as well as distinguished in the Best American Short Stories 2020. They have received fellowships for their writing from the University of Iowa and the Lambda Literary Writers' Retreat, where they were a 2017 Emerging LGBTQ Voices Fellow.
