TV Writing (Writers’ Room) with Celine Fitzpatrick
Lights! Camera! …Storyboard?
Congratulations! I’m pleased to inform you that you have been staffed on the writers’ room of a yet untitled (but sure to be great) TV show produced by the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio! I’m Celine--I’ll be your showrunner this season. We’re running on a tight, two week drafting schedule, so here’s everything that you should know:
You may have already heard that being a great reader will make you a better writer. This good is--the same goes for TV Writing! Whether you’ve binged a Netflix show over a weekend or waited patiently for the next installment of Euphoria to come out each Sunday, you’re probably already familiar with some of the tools that go into creating an engaging show. Maybe you’ve noticed how when lighting changes across a scene, the mood changes along with it, or maybe a single piece of dialogue delivered with particular skill by your favorite actor has stuck with you for days or weeks after the fact. In this TV Writing Class, we will be embracing the spirit of artmaking as collaboration and taking the creation of a screenplay down to basics. Though we won’t have a crew, a makeup artist, or a lighting designer, we will have everything that comes before a TV show can make it onto a set: a whiteboard and a group of people itching to tell a great story.
You will learn the fundamentals of crafting a script by working together as a writers’ room to create a “Show Bible” for our 1-hour drama or dramedy pilot. This “Show Bible” will act as a road map for our script, outlining the episode’s beats, providing character descriptions, and describing the season’s arc. Along with this, you’ll learn the fundamentals: formatting, balancing A, B, and C story lines, creating characters with WANTS and NEEDS, act structure. Then, each writer will get their own special assignment: a chunk of the screenplay to write! Once that’s done we’ll frankenstein all your script pages together and workshop them (maybe one of you writes fire dialogue while another knows how to churn out crisp, efficient action lines). At the end of two weeks, you’ll leave with a finished collaborative pilot and all the skills you need to write your very own scripts!
Celine Fitzpatrick is a writer who grew up between Chicago and Moscow. This upbringing is the subject of much of her realistic fiction, and a mentor once told her that her stories were concerned with “unearthing generational silences.” Sometimes she likes to take a break from all that stuff by writing silly, fantastical screenplays about witches, amateur necromancers, and wild west outlaws. She is currently an MFA candidate in Fiction at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and working on a historical fiction novel titled The Thaw, which follows the relationship of an actress and her dressmaker in 1960s Soviet Russia.
