Full course description
Consider this a crash course in what makes fiction come to life: we'll work on creating characters so deeply imagined and three-dimensional that they can get up and walk right off of the page. We'll dive deep into craft elements like POV, dialogue, and characterization (to name just a few!), getting a handle on the essential building blocks that comprise a narrative. We'll also cover some of the practical elements of "being a writer" (developing a routine, storyboarding) and some of the more ethereal ones (having empathy, gaining perspective on your own work). We'll read a bunch of wonderful published stories and generate and workshop wonderful stories of our own!
Claire Lombardo is a novelist, teacher, and Post-It enthusiast. Her first book, The Most Fun We Ever Had, just out in paperback, was an instant New York Times bestseller and has been translated or is forthcoming in over a dozen languages. The novel is being adapted for a series to be written by Claire and co-produced by Amy Adams and Laura Dern. Claire is a graduate of the University of Illinois-Chicago and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Prior to writing The Most Fun We Ever Had, Claire spent several years working with homeless children and families in Chicago. She has also been a dog walker, a nanny, a temp, and a communications aide at a woodwind nonprofit. She is not herself a woodwind musician. A native of Oak Park, Illinois, she now lives in Iowa City, Iowa, with her dog, Renee.
