Full course description
Are you a fixer? In this course, writers will be introduced to the techniques that masters of three genres (fiction, poetry, and nonfiction) use to create great work! Dive deep into the art of character, setting, the image, voice, style, metaphor, plot, dialogue, poetic line, form, and point of view. By the end of this course, you will have a writing toolbox. You will study the essentials of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction in course readings. You will write a well-crafted short story, poem, and creative nonfiction piece. You will participate in the writers' workshop and critique in addition to receiving instructor feedback. Join us, craftsperson!
Emily Spencer earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and is the author of the forthcoming book East Walnut Hills (2021), winner of the Zone 3 Press First Book Award. Her work appears in the Kenyon Review, Poetry, Pleiades, and elsewhere. Spencer is the recipient of a Kenyon Review Peter Taylor Teaching Fellowship and Boston University Global Writing Fellowship.
